Free AR tools are real, and they are not all toys. That sentence surprised me the first time I wrote it down. But the line between free and paid is sharper than the marketing suggests, so here is how I would draw it.
Free gets you the viewer. Show a 3D model on a product page, let someone place a sofa in their room, often through platform-native features like Shopify's 3D and AR support that cost nothing extra. For a store testing whether shoppers even tap the AR button, free is the honest place to start. If nobody taps it, you just saved yourself a subscription.
Paid starts to matter at scale. The moment you have dozens of SKUs, you are paying for pipeline: bulk capture, format conversion, model cleanup, version control, analytics. A seller phone-scan app for 3D assets might be free to download and paid per processed model. An AR ecommerce plugin SaaS might cover five products free and fifty paid. Pricing follows volume because costs follow volume.
The trap is the middle: paying for a plan before you have proof of demand. My rule is simple. Start free, measure with intent, and only upgrade when you can point at the AR sessions and say the words: this is earning its keep. An AR Shopify plugin app with a free tier is perfect for the experiment.
Free proves the behavior. Paid scales the winners. In that order.
